STARING AT THE END

“All that you desired when you were a child was to be old, now that you are here, suddenly you fear you’ve lost control—do you like the person you’ve become?”

November 22nd 1981, Hyun Sungho was born in an extremely small hospital at the corner of Gangseo-gu, Seoul. It snowed quite hard that day, although snowfall in the 11th month of the year is considered as a rare occasion. Just like how unusual that destined day was, his childhood was rather out of the ordinary.

Unfortunately for the boy, his father was a construction worker who had no desire whatsoever to provide and support his family both financially and mentally; he was a generous man, though, he donated the money that he earned to a gambling house and women in brothels. That good-for-nothing old man would return home as drunk as a lord with nothing in is pocket and started beating the shit out of his wife and his children who grew up with a lot of resentment towards him, to the point where his only daughter ran away from home, abandoning her mother and her younger brother.

The mother of the unfortunate boy was a massage therapist in a small bathhouse near their house who tried her absolute best to take care of her children. Despite all of the circumstances, she protected him from the drunk bastard he had to call father. The boy knew everything; he knew that they were poor and that his father contributed nothing for the family, that they could not turn the air conditioner on during summer and could not turn the heater on during winter.

It went deeper than that; the boy knew that his father abused his mother physically and emotionally, but he did not know what to do in that situation. The boy who was as tall as the orange tree in front of their house thought that his mother was alright when she worked herself to death at the bathhouse, he thought that she was alright when she ate a cold bowl of rice for lunch and breakfast, he thought that she was alright when she cleaned their clothes with her bare hands and cold water on a winter day, he thought she was alright when she told him that she was not hungry even when she starved to feed her children, the boy thought that his mother was alright when the rage of his father did not faze her—she woke up in the middle of the night and cried in silence, that was when the boy realized that his mother was not alright.

Life was given to this boy, but how did the boy stay alive for so long? Merely because he was lucky, or perhaps because the boy’s father had a shred of humanity left? His tears had long since dried up, or perhaps it was due to the talent that was slowly blooming inside him—or maybe his father just needed a puppet to take his anger out on … whatever the reason, though the boy wished for death over and over again, he could not die.

Why did something like this happen? Why is it that even in this situation, he does not know anything besides violence? Does inflicting pain on others relieve the suffering of his heart? Is hitting people fun? I think he might really kill me today.

The world of that boy came to a standstill, and he came into an agreement with himself; that he was not the one who should die, it was not his fault since the very beginning.

1993 was the year when the boy turned twelve years old, it was also the year where the boy made peace with himself and smashed the head of his own father with an ashtray and an empty bottle of alcohol, he reported that old man to the police for domestic abuse. Although the way his mother looked at him that day as he stood on the puddle of blood pained his tiny heart, the boy thought that he should have done that sooner, his rage was righteous and his actions were as pure as the driven snow.

The relationship between the boy and the mother became rather awkward, especially after the news came into their residence; your father committed suicide in the prison, they said. The boy was fourteen when they delivered a letter that his father wrote before his death—into the fire it went. It was hard to forgive that man, he always thought that he deserved it at the very least, it was nothing compared to the pain he caused them. She told him to do so—to forgive, so he could rest in peace … but the boy who had already been living as if he were dead, did not really understand her words.

1999, the boy graduated from high-school with flying colors, it was also the year where he lost his mother due to a heart attack, her sudden death and absence forced him to learn how to live by himself—he was not ready and he did not know where to go, he realized that he was truly alone for the first time. In the end, he went to the only place where he knew he would be accepted with open arms, compulsory military service.

The boy was enlisted in the army during his conscription, he served actively for two years and noticed that it was the only thing that he could do, the sense of duty that he felt throughout his service drove him even further into the unexpected military adventure.

LIFE ON MARS?

"There's an albatross around your neck; all the things you've said, and the things you've done ... can you carry it with no regrets ... can you stand the person you've become?"

Hyun Sungho is cold, ruthless, efficient, and eminently calculating, so much so that it occasionally gets him into trouble. His job is his life, and making a mistake in his eyes is a fate worse than death.

There is not much room for error in his world, he hates to see mistakes being repeated and has absolutely no patience with inefficiency. Sungho could be extremely harsh when his patience is tried in these respects because he is not naturally tuned in to the feelings of other people and more than likely does not believe that he should tailor his judgments in consideration for their feelings.

Sungho treats people harshly and sternly in an unsentimental manner, his real intention is to help them in the long run, one could say that he is being cruel in order to be kind. He is not one of those people who can easily express their affection to someone else, that is why those who do not know him well enough could consider his tough love as pure inconsideration or one hell of an asshole move.

Well-respected ... or feared, he has a tremendous amount of personal power and presence; he makes decisions quickly, and is quick to verbalize his opinions and decisions to the rest of the world. When there are flaws in a system, he sees them; he enjoys the process of discovering and implementing a better way to bring order into the world around him.

Cutthroat and hardcore, which he defines as his edge and something that he is proud of, although it has been causing some emotional problems in his relationship and marriage ... he is not on good terms with his family.

"Why is our wrathful side often addressed as our true color … what about the times where we give it our all … the times where we love more than we should?"
